Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) in Irvine, CA

Looking for a new way to refresh and revitalize your skin? Photodynamic therapy (PDT) at First OC Dermatology can address a wide variety of skin concerns to give you the clear, smooth complexion you deserve.

What is Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)?

We know light rays can be damaging to the skin – but when properly administered by a licensed and experienced specialist, light energy can also be used to improve your skin’s overall health and appearance, including addressing many of the most common skin concerns.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a cutting-edge medical procedure that uses targeted light energy and a photosensitizing agent to target and destroy abnormal cells. By harnessing the power of light, PDT is a fast, minimally invasive and painless alternative to other treatments that may not have been effective in the past.

Whether tackling skin irregularities or enhancing overall skin health, PDT is a highly effective and versatile treatment option to meet a variety of needs.

What Conditions can PDT Treat?

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) uses advanced light dispersal technology to expertly target old, damaged skin cells without negatively affecting surrounding tissues. It has been clinically proven effective in treating:

  • Acne
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Loss skin volume and sagging
  • Discoloration and uneven skin tone
  • Scarring
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Rosacea
  • Eczema

If you have a persistent skin concern and you’re wondering if photodynamic therapy may be right for you, reach out to us today! Our skin health and aesthetic medicine experts will take the time to assess your concerns and determine if you’re a good candidate for PDT.

How Long Does PDT Therapy Take to Work?

When you’ll notice a difference following your photodynamic therapy session depends on a few factors, such as the type and severity of the skin issue being treated, how many sessions you’ve had, and your unique skin’s ability to heal.

For most patients, the effects are noticeable within a few weeks of the first treatment. As your skin continues to heal and repair itself, you will continue to see improvements. However, it’s rare for one session to be enough to achieve optimal results. In most cases, at least 2 to 3 sessions are recommended, but that may change based on your specific case.

During your consultation at First OC Dermatology your provider will recommend a customized regimen of PDT treatments to address your needs, including how many sessions you will need and at what frequency.

What are the Risks of Photodynamic Therapy?

Because PDT works by stimulating your body’s natural healing processes and skin cell turnover, there’s very little risk associated with the treatment. The most common side effects patients experience after photodynamic skin therapy are:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • A skin-burn like sensation
  • Increased sensitivity to light

In rare cases, PDT may cause a change in skin tone in the treated area or lead to scarring. To reduce these risks, it’s important to avoid excessive sun exposure in the days following your PDT treatment. Use sunscreen and protective clothing if you must be outdoors for an extended period of time.
